Husson University to Host the 41st Annual Frank M. Carter Tax Institute

Husson University announced today that it will host the 41st Annual Frank M. Carter Tax Institute on its campus in Bangor, Maine at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business on December 6, 2013. This annual event is designed to provide tax practitioners with the most current information available about the tax and legislative changes affecting their practices and their clients in the upcoming year.

Husson University announced today that it will host the 41st Annual Frank M. Carter Tax Institute on its campus in Bangor, Maine at the Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business on December 6, 2013. This annual event, co-sponsored by Husson University, the Penobscot County Bar Association and the Maine Society of Certified Public Accountants, is designed to provide tax practitioners with the most current information available about the tax and legislative changes affecting their practices and their clients in the upcoming year. The day provides a chance for continuing education credits, as attendees can earn eight hours of CPE and seven hours of CLE, including one hour of ethics credit.

“We’ve got a great line-up of financial thought leaders with expertise at both the federal and state levels. We anticipate a dynamic educational event,” said Nancy Forster-Holt, Ph.D., executive director of entrepreneurship and executive development at Husson University.

Forster-Holt continued: “It’s important for attorneys, accountants and financial planning professionals to fully understand the implications of the latest regulations, tax changes and trends. Staying current helps these financial advisors create value for their clients while enhancing the effectiveness of their practices.”

Topics to be covered at the 41st Annual Frank M. Carter Tax Institute include:

  •     Entities: Martha Broderick, JD, will discuss proposed tax reform affecting pass through entities and the combination of S Corporations and partnerships into one new filing status.
  •     Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs): George Eaton, JD, and Susan Scherbel, JD, will discuss how ESOPs can be used effectively as a liquidity and financing tool.
  •     Maine Estate Taxes: What does the increase in the Federal estate tax exemption mean for Maine’s state estate tax? Find out during this presentation by Heather Popadak, CPA, and Jeff Jones, JD.
  •     Federal Tax Update: Justin Coffin, JD, CPA, and MacDonald Page will talk about the changes affecting tax rates, depreciation, and 263A regulations as well as other potential future changes currently under discussion in Congress.
  •     Retirement Plans for Small Businesses: This informative session will provide information about retirement plan alternatives and their associated tax complexities. Bill Enck, CPA, CPC, APA, will be the featured presenter and discussion leader.
  •     Update on the Affordable Care Act’s Impact on Employers: In addition to retirement planning, Bill Enck will provide Institute attendees with the latest updates on the Affordable Care Act as well as some useful healthcare planning ideas.
  •     Maine’s Board of Tax Appeals (BOTA): Robert Creamer, JD, will explain the procedure for filing an appeal with the Board; what taxpayer representatives should know about this process; and what to do if you disagree with the Board’s decision. This is a “must-not-miss” presentation for tax professionals.
  •     Professional Ethics: Husson University Assistant Professor John Michaud will discuss ethical lapses, their possible causes and the need for high ethical standards in business dealings.

The registration fee to attend Husson University’s 41st Annual Frank M. Carter Tax Institute is $125 for the full day. This includes presentation materials, lunch and snacks. Registration begins at 7:30 am. The full-day program runs from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
