Seven years ago Jerrod Sessler, CEO and Founder of HomeTask, was frustrated that his washing machine was going to require a $700 repair when the problem was a simple bearing and seal failure. In response, he not only fixed his machine, but created a path for others to make similar repairs. Sessler put together a kit to make the repair because, as he says, "The replacement parts simply were not available. The manufacturers would only sell the entire washer tub assemblies but all I needed was a set of bearings and a seal." This month Sessler sold his 5,000th bearing and seal kit, turning his personal fix into an entrepreneurial venture that would save people millions of dollars and challenge the way that manufacturers handle production and supply.

The high cost of professional repair and the DIY information on the internet has spurred on consumers in recent years to learn how to repair their own appliances. Sessler shares, “I searched for replacement bearing and seal kits, remembering back to high school days when I replaced the bearings on the front axles of my 1973 Volkswagen bug. Unfortunately, I found out that the only option was to purchase the entire tub assembly, which left me irritated and frustrated. I sought out a solution and eventually found out that I had to manufacture or have manufactured the replacement seals.” Sessler eventually decided to create the repair kit and has since helped thousands of consumers repair their own washing machine, bypassing costly replacements demanded by manufacturers.

Sessler recently issued a challenge to manufacturers, that they “need to refine the overall design with front load machines so that they last longer. They also need to make more replacement parts available so that these repairs can be made in a cost effective manner, rather than costing the value of the machine.” Sessler estimates that consumers have saved over $2.8 million dollars through purchasing the bearing and seal kit, as opposed to buying the enter assembly or having a professional technician make the repair.
