Representatives with announced today that it has officially launched, a free tool that helps physicians see their expected Board Pass Rate percentage.

Daniel Lambert, chief executive officer of, explained that Medical Board Exams are notoriously recognized as difficult, but critical to a physician’s career.

Failure to pass the boards, according to Lambert, may mean that a physician can’t practice for a period of time.

“What kind of doctor you are makes a big difference as well,” Lambert stressed, before adding, “ENT doctors have it pretty easy with a 95 percent pass rate, while Pathology, which is generally recognized as the hardest specialty has an average pass rate of 68 percent.”

Lambert went on to point out that BoardVital’s Dr. Andrea Paul MD left her medical training to try to improve these pass rates and was recently recognized for her efforts.

Today, physicians have to study from books, notes, journals and websites in order to pass their exams.

“Dr. Paul had the idea of bringing together all of the providers of information into question banks for physicians. For the first time, all of this assessment material is in one location,” Lambert noted. “Physicians love it.”

Paul explained that, “As we interacted more and more with physicians, we started to understand what helped people pass their exams, and what didn’t. We built an intelligent system that makes recommendations on an individual basis, and it’s working.”

The doctor added that they are seeing great results.

“We’ve also been learning a lot more about what kinds of students do well, and we want to share that with other physicians so that they can better prepare,” Paul said.

According to BoardVitals, there are multiple factors that predict how well a physician performs on exams.

Schools located in the Caribbean and other non-traditionally located programs actually have higher pass rates on average.

“This is likely due to a very high emphasis on testing, perhaps even at the detriment of clinical exposure or experience,” Lambert said. “The top programs also tend to fare better than second or third tier schools.”

According to the data, the number one best predictor of Specialty Board Pass Rate is the score that a student achieves on their USMLE Step 3 Exam.

“It is very rare for a top performer on the Step 3 to fail a Specialty Board Exam, even in the more difficult areas of Medicine such as Pathology or OBGYN, the data indicated.

“Combining the specialty, program attended, and Step 3 Exam score can serve as a reasonable predictor of board pass percentages,” Lambert said. “BoardPassRates will actually email physicians a score based on the information provided. The predictor doesn’t really cover re-certification exams or In-Service exams, but it’s a good yardstick for general performance on the boards. Boards aren’t easy, but using the right study tools and resources can greatly improve performance.
