For The First Time Ever Colorado Issues Recreational Marijuana Sales License
Commerce, CA (PRWEB) November 30, 2013 -- The State of Colorado has issued its first recreational marijuana sales license to a dispensary in Central City, Colorado. Annie's, a dispensary located in the Rocky mountain Gambling town, was the recipient of the historic license. It is one of eight dispensaries owned by the Strainwise company to have applied for licensure and the first to be approved. "For the first time in history, those who sell marijuana are receiving licenses from the state instead of rap sheets. Marijuana will be sold to adults by legitimate, taxpaying businesses instead of drug cartels in the underground market," said Mason Tvert, and advocate for legalization and communications director for Marijuana Policy Project.
Colorado is leading the way in making recreational marijuana dispensaries a retail reality, with 136 shops applying for license in the month of October. As the first to be approved, Annie's can open its doors as a recreational use provider on Jan 1st 2014 and all others will be approved or denied by that date. "This development is the culmination of months and years of hard work by Strainwise and other advocates of marijuana legalization in Colorado," a Spokesperson for California-based dispensary supply company A&A packaging said. "These businesses should be proud to be blazing the trail that other states will soon follow." It has been estimated that since the announcement that the Justice Department announced that it would allow Colorado and Washington's marijuana laws to go into effect that legal marijuana is one of the fastest growing markets in the US, outpacing the expansion of the global smart phone market.
According to Colorado's new Amendment 64, which legalizes marijuana for recreational use, only providers who are in good standing as medical marijuana providers are eligible to apply for the recreational license. Similarly, sales of the product are subject to the same safety and packaging standards that are in effect for the sale of medical marijuana. The product will need to be sold in compliant childproof packaging similar to that required for over the counter medication. A representative for A&A packaging said that these businesses are the ones that are already compliant, and best qualified to be the first stores to usher in this historic legislation "This is an opportunity to show the entire country that it is possible to sell marijuana in legitimate, taxpaying businesses with the interests of the public in mind."
