Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates’ Phillip Shaffer, MD to Present on Breast MR at 2013 RSNA Annual Meeting
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 02, 2013 -- Phillip Shaffer, MD, breast imaging radiologist at Riverside Radiology and Interventional Associates (RRIA) has been invited to present two original abstracts at the 99th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North American (RSNA), December 1-6, 2013 at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL.
Both abstracts focus on breast MR. The first, entitled “Sources of Error in MR Directed Breast Biopsies,” will be presented on Sunday, December 1, and provides an analysis of 374 MR breast biopsies, along with recommendations for successfully performing MR breast biopsies. The second abstract, “Breast Cancer Invisible to Ultrasound,” will be presented on Wednesday, December 4, and focuses on 167 negative second look ultrasounds prior to MR biopsies, how these ultrasound invisible cancers were eventually identified, and the ultrasonographic patterns of benign and malignant groups.
“It is known that there are a large number of breast cancers that breast MR will detect, but are invisible to ultrasound and mammography,” explains Dr. Shaffer. “The question I had was, ‘why is MR so much better?’ I reviewed ultrasounds performed in areas that were abnormal on MR and were found to be cancer. I found that even when the changes in blood flow we see with MR scans were obviously abnormal, these cancers did not distort the normal anatomy enough to be recognized by ultrasound. There remain a number of cancers that can only be seen with breast MR. The changes in blood flow that the MR show are simply a more sensitive way to look for cancers, as opposed to purely looking at anatomy, as ultrasound does. Some of these cancers were quite large, up to 12 centimeters.
