Performed by the New York City Ballet, The Nutcracker lures children and adults alike into the enchanting kingdom of the Sugarplum Fairy to the accompaniment of Peter Tschaikovsky's soaring musical score. The Nutcracker was first performed by the New York City Ballet in February 1954, choreographed by its founder George Balanchine, who once played the role of the prince in the Russian production. Since then it has become a yearly holiday tradition with the ballet company staging 47 performances each year at the David H. Koch Theatre.
Every year, 90 dancers, 62 musicians, 32 stagehands and two casts of 50 students from the School of American Ballet come together to create a captivating performance with grand set designs and stunning costumes based on the original work of famous stage designers Barbara Karinska and Rouben Ter-Arutunian.
Elaborate visual elements sweep the audience into fantasy, beginning with the snowstorm that sweeps a group of ballerinas onto the stage. Balanchine’s choreography sets the stage for all these with truly magnificent routines that can only leave the audience in awe of the performance.
The Nutcracker is based on Alexandre Dumas, père version of 1816 tale of The Nutcracker and The Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffman. Originally a tale intended for adults, Alexandre Dumas, père created his own version to make it more suitable for children. It was later made into a ballet by Marius Petipa of the Russian Imperial Ballet who commissioned Peter Ilyitch Tschaikovsky to create the musical score and his assistant Lev Ivanov to develop the choreography. The Nutcracker was first performed as a ballet in December 1892 at St. Petersburg, Russia.
The story is about a young girl who is gifted with a nutcracker on Christmas Eve and is later swept into a dream to the Land of Toys where the Nutcracker battles with and slays the Mouse King, after which the Nutcracker becomes a Prince. The young girl and the Prince are then taken to the Land of Sweets where the Sugarplum Fairy resides and treats them to a plethora of sweets and entertainment. The story ends with the young girl and the Prince bidding the Sugarplum fairy goodbye.
