Pradaxa Lawsuit News: Wright & Schulte LLC Reports on Growing Pradaxa Bleeding Litigation, As Number of Filings Exceed 1,800
Colubus, OH (PRWEB) December 02, 2013 -- The products liability litigation surrounding Pradaxa continues to grow, as Wright & Schulte LLC notes that the number of Pradaxa lawsuits pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio has now exceeded 1,800. According to court documents, at least 1,844 claims have been filed in the Southern District of Ohio on behalf of 1,929 plaintiffs. All of the lawsuits allege that Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of the blood thinner, failed to provide adequate warnings regarding the potential for Pradaxa bleeding side effects, especially the lack of an effective antidote to reverse internal hemorrhaging that may occur with the drug. Wright & Schulte LLC believes these alleged problems, inadequate labeling and no antidote for Pradaxa, are the reasons for the continued escalation of Pradaxa lawsuits. Brought to market in 2010, Pradaxa is used to prevent strokes in people with atrial fibrillation. In October, the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices reported that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) received just over 3,290 reports of Pradaxa side effects in 2012, more than any other drug it monitors. Most of the reports involved cases of Pradaxa bleeding, and more than 582 detailed fatalities among Pradaxa users.

In its report, the ISMP was sharply critical of the FDA, which continues to maintain that Pradaxa is as safe as the decades-old blood thinner, warfarin. Both drugs can sometimes cause serious internal bleeding. However, administration of vitamin K can quickly bring an end to warfarin bleeding. The ISMP pointed out that while 18% of Pradaxa adverse events involved a fatality, only 6.5% of those attributed to warfarin reported a similar outcome.
According to court documents, the Pradaxa lawsuits currently pending in the Southern District of Illinois are moving forward quickly. The Court has scheduled a telephonic Status Conference for December 20, 2013. In an Order dated November 4th, the Court also set forth a procedure for selecting Pradaxa lawsuits for the litigation’s first bellwether trials. According to court documents, those trials are scheduled to begin in August 2014.
