Annie Duke Comments on Federal Budget Crisis on CNN

Former championship poker player Annie Duke discusses bluffing and when to fold in the context of the federal debt ceiling crisis.

Decision making coach and renowned professional poker player Annie Duke was featured alongside other notable decision making and negotiation experts in a CNN Your Money video on the federal standoff between Republicans and Democrats on the debt ceiling.

The video, which featured Annie Duke, also included Chris Voss, former FBI crisis negotiator and executive at Black Swan Group; John King, CNN Chief National Correspondent; Wendy Walsh, Professor of Psychology at California State University; Les Gold, star of TruTV’s ‘Hardcore Pawn’; and Leigh Steinberg, nationally recognized sports agent and attorney.

The video, hosted by CNN’s Christine Romans, breaks down the federal budget crisis into a communications problem, where both parties should focus on common ground in order to remember who the real audience is – the American people. The problem, states Les Gold, is that “Nobody knows what they really want.”

According to Steinberg, the conversation has “lost sight of the long-term;” Walsh corroborates this by likening the Tea Party to “an angry stepchild” and Obama and Speaker Boehner as parent’s who’ve forgotten their other children.

With the budget as the crux, Duke weighed in, stating that “holding the debt ceiling over the budget negotiation is like moving all your chips into the pot – playing high stakes poker with other people’s money.” The problem is that it’s difficult to tell which side is bluffing, and if it turns out they aren’t, one side “needs to back down and fold before they lose all of their chips.”
