The Children’s Spot Announces Social Thinking Groups
Howard County, MD (PRWEB) December 04, 2013 -- The Children’s Spot will begin to offer social thinking groups this December for children that are experiencing difficulty with social skills. The 6-week session, run by, occupational therapist, Angela Liston, BCBA/Behavior therapist, Kimahni Peele and speech therapist, Nicole Orellana; owners of Children’s Spot, will follow topics from The Social Thinking Curriculum by Michelle Garcia Winner.
“If you know your child is struggling in social situations such as trouble making friends, can’t get along with peers or cannot pick up on social queues; these social thinking groups can help. With the help of therapists and small groups of kids their own age we can begin to teach them how to behave and interact appropriately with others in a safe environment,” stated Liston.
Classes will also include work with expected and unexpected behaviors, how to evaluate larger problems versus smaller problems, and how behavior influences how you are treated by others, co-operative play, flexible thinking, becoming a “social detective” as well as many other social skills. Throughout the one hour class there will be group discussions, hands on games and activities.
The ideal candidate for the group sessions are early elementary school age children and older, who are uncomfortable with social interaction. Prior to the first session, each participant and a parent will meet with a therapist for screening to ensure the proper placement dependent on the child’s needs and ability.
For parents frustrated with navigating their children’s social anxiety, The Children’s Spot offers a solid solution with these affordable, convenient workshops. Classes are not limited to December only; the groups will continue to be offered regularly through The Children’s Spot.
