Dr. Corrine Scalzitti Focuses on Pancreatic Cancer and Gum Disease in Austin, TX
Austin, TX (PRWEB) December 03, 2013 -- With November being Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Austin, TX general dentist Dr. Corrine Scalzitti and her staff are working hard to promote better awareness about the relationship between pancreatic cancer and gum disease and how obtaining care to treat and eliminate such infection with treatments like laser gum surgery can improve overall health and reduce the risk of such diseases. Multiple clinical studies suggested a connected between the two diseases including a trial from Harvard University which indicated that patients with periodontal infection may be up to 63 percent more likely to have pancreatic cancer than their non-periodontal infected counterparts.
Gum disease has been linked to a higher risk for many different medical conditions including low birth weight, stroke, diabetes and heart disease. The suggested link with pancreatic cancer is based upon two different facts. One relates to nitrosamines, which are carcinogens that are proven to have an influence on the development of pancreatic cancer. These same carcinogens are also present in the oral cavity when infection takes hold in the gums and then can travel via the blood to other parts of the body. In addition, infections in the gums that are not treated instigate the body to produce a particular type of antibody in an attempt to ward off the infection. Pancreatic cancer patients have been discovered to contain this particular antibody, known as P. gingivalis, in amounts far greater than patients without this type of cancer.
Dr. Scalzitti wishes to make Austin area residents aware of the importance of treating gum disease and offers a variety of techniques from deep cleanings to state-of-the-art laser gum surgery based upon individual patient needs and situations. Heeding early signs of periodontal disease such as red, swollen or even bleeding gums and seeking early treatment is always advised as an optimal path but treatment options are available for more advanced infections as well.
