Dr Tariq Drabu Warns of the Damage to Oral Health Caused by Smoking and Drinking Alcohol to Excess
(PRWEB) December 05, 2013 -- Dr Tariq Drabu is respected within UK dentistry as a specialist and leader in the field of dentistry. He is the owner of the renowned Langley Dental Practice based in Middleton, Manchester. He is also the highly respected Clinical Lead Dentist for Oral Surgery Clinical Assessment and Treatment Services for NHS Heywood Middleton, and Rochdale. With over 25 years’ loyal service to UK dentistry, he has a wealth of knowledge and experience in general practice, and specialist hospital dentistry.
Speaking recently, Dr Tariq Drabu warned of the risks of smoking and drinking, saying, “Recently published research has highlighted the serious news that there are still too many people who are unaware of the health risks resulting from excessive use of tobacco and alcohol.”
Dr Tariq Drabu was referring to an article recently published by The-Dentist.co.uk. The new survey shows that almost 89% of respondents did not know the increased risk of mouth cancer posed by excessive use of tobacco and alcohol. The article can be read here.
Although it seems the public do understand the damage smoking and drinking can cause to general health, very few appreciate the high risks of developing mouth cancer as a result of overindulging in tobacco and alcohol. The survey indicates that overindulgence of both substances can increase risks of mouth cancer by thirty times.
Dr Tariq Drabu told us about some of the ways this problem is being tackled, “Many professionals in the field of dentistry are joining forces to combat the alarming increase in of mouth cancer cases by raising awareness. Mouth Cancer Action Month has been organised by the British Dental Health Foundation. The hope is to raise awareness, educate people, and to lobby government to take affirmative action.”
Dr Tariq Drabu continued, “The group has called on the Government to be firm in its stance to protect the population from this risk by legislating for standardised packaging on tobacco and minimum pricing for alcohol. There is huge support for the campaign from the public. Here at Langley, our team are all behind the campaign. My team and I are determined to do all we can to get the message across.”
The report indicates that mouth cancer is one of the leading forms of cancer in the UK, and statistics suggest its incidence will increase over the next ten years. By supporting standardised packaging, and placing a minimum pricing level on alcohol, the hope is that the number of people using tobacco and alcohol in the extreme will massively reduce, thus reducing the instances of mouth cancer.
Dr Tariq Drabu also said, “Over 50% of respondents support the move to standardised packaging on cigarettes. This is an issue that is extremely important to the general population. I believe it is extremely important that the dental profession speaks up and helps to spread the word. This campaign can educate and inform people without delay.”
Dr Tariq Drabu closed by saying, “We all have a part to play in encouraging the Government to act responsibly and swiftly. This is a serious issue, and action must be taken to save as many lives as possible.”
