Lifetime DNA Storage Now Offered by Leading DNA Banker
St. Paul, MN (PRWEB) December 04, 2013 -- Genetic Sentinel, Inc., the leader in DNA banking and genetic privacy protection, has added lifetime DNA storage and privacy protection to its DNA banking options.
This new storage option provides consumers with secure and private access to their bio-sample for any testing over the course of their life, as well as the security and protection of controlled, private testing should any analysis be required.
Genetic Sentinel is making the announcement just as 23andMe has been ordered by the Food and Drug Administration to stop selling its DNA test kit because it does not meet the FDA's marketing regulations.
“Our offering of private, safe and secure lifetime DNA storage is in direct response to customer inquiries and the need for people across the United States to take control of their DNA analysis and reports,” said Genetic Sentinel spokesman Chad Goehring. “For too long companies have been legally selling DNA information by not excluding further testing of samples. This type of abuse preys on unknowing people and patients.”
While 23andMe collects genetic material and runs tests immediately for any reason stated by the consumer, Genetic Sentinel instead protects its consumers' privacy by banking the sample and coordinating a DNA test only when ordered by the patient and their physician. Consumers can bank their sample and when a doctor requests a DNA test, it can be done quickly and efficiently. Unlike other DNA companies, Genetic Sentinel collects absolutely no data that can later be sent to life insurance companies, long-term care providers or disability insurers.
“While it is legal under the Genetic Information Notification Act to sell DNA results to insurance companies for many different reasons, it is ruthless and wrong to not tell people what is happening to their samples when they are tested. The safe and secure banking of bio-samples for secure testing at a later date is the answer to the needless DNA testing that is being done today by many internet-based DNA companies,” Goehring said.
When a patient requests a stored DNA sample to be tested, that report is sent only to the patient designated parties. The remaining sample is destroyed, and Genetic Sentinel provides a new bio-sample container for continued banking. This insures that additional testing does not occur without the owner's permission.
“Privacy concerns are what make banking DNA material so important,” Goehring said. “Our new lifetime storage option gives our consumers the protection they want and need.”
