Walter Gearhart and Marilyn Viebrock-Gearhart, have been awarded the 2013 Health Improvement Institute’s Award of Excellence for Lifetime Achievement for their extensive work in the field of human research protection. The awards were announced today by Dr. Peter G. Goldschmidt, President and Founder of the Health Improvement Institute in Bethesda, MD.
Marilyn Viebrock-Gearhart was acknowledged for over 20 years of practical experience in managing clinical trials in addition to her contributions while founding and operating Quorum Review IRB. Walter Gearhart was recognized for serving as a member of the first ethical review board convened at Western Institutional Review Board in 1981. Mr. Gearhart also served as WIRB’s first IRB Chair, holding that position for 8 years, before branching out and co-founding Quorum Review IRB in 1992.
For the past 20 years, Walter and Marilyn have overseen Quorum Review IRB which has grown into one of the largest IRB’s in the United States overseeing human subject research nationwide as well as abroad. Both individuals continue to provide leadership and actively serve on Quorum Review IRB’s Board of Directors.
“The Award program offers positive recognition for excellence in the field of human research protection,” said Dr. Goldschmidt. “This year’s awards continue the high standard that we have seen since the program began. We congratulate the winners.” The awards were created by the Institute and are given annually for demonstrated excellence in promoting the well-being of people who participate in research.
