According to an article in Chester First, thousands of the taxpayer’s pounds have been spent on cleaning buildings that have allegedly been vandalised with mindless graffiti. Whilst not all of the city’s graffiti has been caused by the man, made infamous for his DAKA tag and believed to be in his 20’s, allegedly caught on CCTV, it is believed that he is one of the city’s most prolific offenders.

From April to November this year there were 657 different incidents of graffiti throughout Chester, though supposedly not all related to the culprit behind the DAKA tag. The graffiti has been found in several areas and the police are attempting to plot a pattern to the crimes.

Each patch of graffiti can take up to two or three days to clean and can sometimes require specialist cleaning that can cost a further £2,000; the cost of cleaning up this crime falls to the taxpaying residents of the city.

A spokesperson from CCTV security systems vendor, AlertSystems, supported the Police search and said, ‘all crimes are serious, and whilst no one has been physically hurt by this crime, it does have a financial affect on the any business that has been a victim. Damage and vandalism carried out on businesses tarnishes the professional appearance and can cost a business’s customers. It also costs the taxpayer thousands of pounds. These are thousands of pounds that could be spent elsewhere, improving standards of living.

‘It’s only because of CCTV security systems that we are able to start closing down on the perpetrator of these crimes. The use of CCTV is varied and can be applied to a number of settings, in this case the footage allows the police to begin identifying the offender.’
