Colorado State University-Global Campus Receives Approval to Create a New Chapter of the Student Veterans of America
Greenwood Village, Colo. (PRWEB) December 11, 2013 -- Improving the quality and accessibility of higher education opportunities to U.S. Military Servicemembers and their families is a top priority for Colorado State University-Global Campus (CSUGlobal.edu) as the nation’s first independent, 100 percent online public university. To this end, CSU-Global is proud to announce the creation of its new chapter of the Student Veterans of America and other expanded military services as part of its Operation EDU initiative.
“Nearly 20 percent of our student body has a military affiliation, making it increasingly important that we provide superior support for this unique population,” said Dr. Becky Takeda-Tinker, President of Colorado State University-Global Campus. “Through the creation of our Student Veterans Organization, new career services, and other support resources, we will continue to be a leader in helping military students complete their degrees and achieve academic and professional success.”
Student Veterans of America (SVA) approved the creation of the CSU-Global chapter in November 2013. With over 950 chapters at universities across the nation, the SVA provides networking opportunities and a wide variety of other support tools to assist in the transition from military service to career success through education. While elections for the organization’s officers and the formalization of the chapter’s constitution are still to come, the mission of CSU-Global’s chapter is to provide military veterans with the online resources, support, and student advocacy needed to succeed as adult learners in higher education and beyond.
The new Student Veterans Organization is one of several university enhancements being offered to military students through CSU-Global’s Operation EDU initiative. Started in September of 2013, Operation EDU aims to further the ability for active duty service members, veterans, and their families to successfully finish their college degrees online. Through Operation EDU, the university has also expanded its Career Center to include military specific resources and career coaching services as well as offering a number of military scholarship opportunities including one for eligible military spouses through an affiliation with the National Military Families Association.
“We fully appreciate the sacrifices military personnel and their families make for our country,” continued Dr. Takeda-Tinker, “And as a public university designed for working adults and nontraditional learners, we are dedicated to providing the educational opportunities and support services necessary to assist in their success.”
Colorado State University-Global Campus’ resolute focus on military student services is evident through the industry recognition it has received. The university is a proud member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium and has been acknowledged as a military friendly university in 2013 by GI Jobs Magazine, Military Advanced Education Magazine, and Victory Media. More importantly, university data reports that CSU-Global military students take approximately two years to graduate and the fourth year retention/graduation rate for military students is 72 percent. Additionally, the online learning environment provided by CSU-Global means that eight percent of its military student body is actually completing classes while still overseas, allowing them to continue their education during their service and be better prepared to start their careers when they return home.
