Encompass HealthCare Wound Healing Center Celebrates Its Third Anniversary Healing Bedsores, Pressure Ulcers, and Non-healing Wounds in its Outpatient Setting
West Bloomfield, MI (PRWEB) January 16, 2014 -- Encompass HealthCare, an advanced outpatient wound care center in West Bloomfield, Michigan, is celebrating its third anniversary of healing non-healing wounds. The Center has been offering wound care patients a safer and more-convenient alternative to in-hospital wound care since January 2011, utilizing I.V. antibiotic therapies, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, stem cell therapies, artificial skin grafts, skin flaps, wound debridement, wound vacuum systems, circulation evaluation, lymphedema management, and complete nutritional assessments.
"What we’ve learned over the past three years is that the office-based wound care delivery model works best for patients,” said Dr. Bruce Ruben, Medical Director at Encompass HealthCare. “We’ve proven that you can offer the same advanced treatments and diagnostics found in modern hospitals, but without the added health risks and bureaucracies associated with hospital care.”
Those risks include nosocomial infections, which are infections a patient acquires while in the hospital. According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, one in every 20 hospitalized patients has an infection caused by receiving medical care.
Encompass HealthCare's delivery model is unique in that it consolidates all aspects of wound care under one roof and under one doctor’s supervision. Dr. Ruben, who has three board certifications in Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine, has the expertise and education he hopes will someday be the basis for a board certification in wound care. That subspecialty does not currently exist.
“Today, wound care is handled by a variety of specialists including podiatrists, plastic surgeons, general surgeons, internal medicine physicians and infectious disease doctors,” explains Ruben. “Non-healing wound patients usually have underlying medical conditions which means they have to see even more doctors. So what we’ve shown over these first three years is that patient outcomes improve dramatically when they’re able to have just one physician treating all the underlying conditions that stop wounds from healing,” Ruben said. Those conditions involve poor circulation, infection, edema, poor nutrition and repetitive trauma to the wound.
With its third anniversary, Encompass HealthCare has established an excellent track record for successfully treating all kinds of wound care patients, especially paraplegic and quadriplegic patients. The 5,500 square-foot Center is "barrier-free" with extra wide hallways, a lift system, automatic doors, special bathroom support fixtures, a roll-in shower and 48-inch-tall walls. According to Dr. Ruben, who has been practicing medicine for 28 years, the facility also encourages a sense of community among patients that promotes healing.
“When patients interact not only with their doctors but also with other patients, they stop feeling alone with their chronic or non-healing wound. They isolate less and a real camaraderie develops. The positive psychological benefits are extraordinary.”
