Flavor Your Life Uncovers Some of the Ancient Uses of Olive Oil
Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) December 13, 2013 -- Flavor Your Life, a European Union funded campaign committed to sharing the latest olive oil industry news, discusses some of the historic ways people have used olive oil in their everyday life.
Olive trees and olive oil have been used throughout history for a variety of reasons and purposes, and has even made its mark in ancient literature. Throughout monumental pieces like the Illiad and the Odyssey by the Greek poet Homer, olive trees and olive oil have made appearances, from the olive branch that was used to defeat the Cyclops, to the scene in which Ulysses was covered and washed in olive oil.
During the ancient Olympic Games, athletes would be massaged with olive oil for therapeutic and healing purposes, and winners would be awarded jars of olives.
Olive oil once lit up entire cities. Oil lamps throughout ancient Greece and Rome used olive oil to sustain light.
Also amongst ancient Grecians, olive oil was used for many cosmetic purposes including fragrance for the skin and hair. Men in particular would have a small vial of olive oil hanging from their wrist or belt for fragrance.
Homer also wrote about how the dead would be sprinkled with olive oil and their tombs decorated with olive tree branches. The ancient Egyptians also had an important use for olive oil. Ancient Egyptians would use olive oil to anoint bodies waiting for mummification. By using olive oil for this purpose, the ancient Egyptians were aware of and appreciated olive oil’s intense hydrating and moisturizing properties. It is clear that by using olive oil to preserve their dead, Egyptians and Grecians believed olive oil held vitality properties.
