San Diego Magazine — in partnership with the San Diego County Medical Society — announces Dr. Kai among its list of San Diego’s 749 top physicians in 65 specialties.

Lasting Recovery - -- San Diego’s premier outpatient alcohol and drug addiction treatment center — today announced that Medical Director Dr. Kai MacDonald has made the list of San Diego Magazine’s 749 top physicians — or “Top Docs” — in 65 specialties for the fifth consecutive year.

“We’re thrilled to have Dr. MacDonald receive this honor as testament to the trust and respect he garners from the patients in our intensive and partial hospitalization programs,” said Judy Saalinger, Co-Founder and Executive Director.

Dr. MacDonald, who joined Lasting Recovery as Medical Director in 2008, takes a practical, broad-based approach and has expertise with all aspects of substance use disorders. “At Lasting Recovery we address all aspects of alcohol and drug addiction,” he says. “When I evaluate patients, I take a whole-person approach, evaluating brain disorders, pain disorders, medical issues, medications, relationships . . . the gamut.  Every individual brings something unique to recovery.”

“It’s wonderful that San Diego Magazine and the San Diego County Medical Society confirm what we already know about Dr. Kai that he is a first-rate, caring physician,” said Arthur Farkas, Co-Founder and Clinical Director.

Dr. MacDonald earned his MD from the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed his residency at UCSD Combined Family Practice-Psychiatry Program from 1993 to 1998. After that training, Dr. MacDonald was board certified in both Family Medicine and Psychiatry.

The San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS), working collaboratively with San Diego Magazine for a decade, identifies board-certified physicians within the court who are held in highest regard by their peers.

These individuals have been identified by their peers as physicians to whom they would entrust the care of their own family members and patients. Among these honorees, 52 have been recognized by their peers in nine of the past 11 years, 31 have been recognized ten of the past 11 years, and nine have been recognized in all 11 years. There is no greater compliment one can receive from one’s colleagues!

According to San Diego Magazine: the voting process, which has always been and will remain transparent, is the following: Any board-certified physician in San Diego may vote for any board-certified doctors who practice within San Diego County to whom they would refer their patients and family members. Voting is open to all physicians, not just members for the Medical Society.

In 2013, more than 1,300 physicians voted with a selection rate of 7.4 percent. Each selectee was then reviewed by SDCMS to confirm his or her board certification, Medical Board of California standing, and current practice status.

This year’s process resulted in 749 physicians being honored by their peers.
