An article published by Digital Journal on December 3rd, titled “The newfound benefits of the Mediterranean Diet,” reported that following a Mediterranean diet reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death in the US. The article explains that the switch from “bad” fats to “good” fats, like olive oil, avocado and fish, significantly reduces LDL levels while increasing HDL levels.

The article also discusses a 15 year-long study conducted by Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston that reported women in their late 50s to early 60s who followed a Mediterranean diet were more likely to survive to 70 without developing diabetes, heart disease, cancer, or other chronic illnesses.

Sexenian responded to this report by stating, “With extra virgin olive oil at the core of the Mediterranean diet, these findings are not a very big surprise. Extra virgin olive oil lowers LDL, also known as 'bad cholesterol,' which is the culprit of cardiovascular disease. Extra virgin olive oil is also rich in polyphenols, vitamin E, and other natural antioxidants that all work to lower the risk of obesity, diabetes and some and forms of cancer, in particular breast cancer.” Sexenian also states that extra virgin olive oil is more beneficial to health than other types of olive oil because it undergoes less processing, keeping the most nutrients and health key players intact.
