Pedestrian Death Highlights Roadside Danger
ST. LUCIE, FLORIDA (PRWEB) December 12, 2013 -- A tractor trailer struck and killed a man whose car broke down on I-95 last month. Miami car accident lawyer Michael Steinger says the fatality is sadly not unusual for motorists stranded on the roadside.
David Burke, 67, had been heading north on I-95 when his vehicle broke down around 8:00 a.m., according to CBS 12 News (11.16.2013). Florida Highway Patrol says that Burke stepped out of his vehicle and was struck by the truck, killing him.
“It's always serious when a vehicle strikes a pedestrian,” said Steinger, whose firm Steinger, Iscoe & Greene works to protect and represent the victims of accidents. “But when a semi truck is traveling at freeway speeds, it will end in tragedy. A human being can't survive that kind of impact.”
Unfortunately, Steinger says that such accidents are common.
“When you pull over on the shoulder, people don't realize what incredible danger you're putting yourself in,” he said. “Even staying in your vehicle, it's crucial to put on hazard lights and get as far off the road as possible. Stepping out on foot should be avoided.”
Steinger says that many roadside accidents can be prevented simply by thinking about the flow of traffic.
“Don't stop on a curve or a hill. Coast your car as far as it can go, if it means getting to a straight, visible location.”
When getting out of the car on the roadside, Steinger urges caution.
“Stay far, far off the road,” he warned. “Vehicles stray from the lane and even just grazing you can be serious.”
Police have not filed charges in connection with the accident.
