“Foundations of Flipped Learning” Named Top Product of 2013 by School Administrators

Foundations of Flipped Learning,” a new teacher professional development offering from Flipped Learning Network™ and Pearson, is one of District Administration readers’ “Top 100 Products of 2013.” Based on the work of Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams, considered the pioneers of flipped learning, the blended learning course for K-12 educators combines face-to-face training and online coaching to prepare teachers to flip their classrooms.

The annual District Administration “Readers’ Choice Top 100 Products” awards recognize the year’s most innovative products, and inform superintendents and other senior school leaders about products their colleagues are using to accelerate student achievement. This year’s winners were selected by the magazine’s editors from a record 1,800-plus reader nominations.

“As educators and administrators discover the benefits of flipped instruction, it is crucial that teachers receive the coaching and support they need to implement it,” said Flipped Learning Network’s Executive Director Kari M. Arfstrom. “It is exciting to have District Administration and its readers around the country recognize both the power of flipped learning and the importance of ensuring that teachers are fully prepared to leverage this new instructional model to engage their students and put them on a path to success in college and career.”

Through a one-day, on-site workshop and 6-8 hours of online training, “Foundations of Flipped Learning” explores the four essential elements of this instructional strategy that have been identified by the Flipped Learning Network and Pearson based on the available literature: the four pillars of F-L-I-P™ -- Flexible Environment, Learning Culture, Intentional Content and Professional Educators

The Flipped Learning model of instruction, while virtually unknown a few years ago, is gaining attention and adherents among teachers and administrators in K-12 and postsecondary classrooms. In this model, some or most of direct instruction is delivered outside the group learning space using video or other modes of delivery. Class time, then, is available for students to engage in hands-on learning, collaborate with their peers, and evaluate their progress and for teachers to provide one-on-one assistance, guidance and inspiration. The shift is from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered learning environment.

The research supports what schools around the country report. In flipped classrooms, achievement increases, students are more engaged in learning and teachers reporter higher levels of job satisfaction.
