Injuries from a family member's car sent a 14-month-old boy to intensive care last month. Orlando car accident lawyer Michael Steinger says that accidents involving small children frequently involve the most severe injuries.

The boy was outside when his uncle, 24-year-old Jean Max Saint Leger, backed a BMW down the driveway according to the Orlando Sentinel (11.24.2013). The child got behind the vehicle and Saint Leger apparently did not see him.

A 5-year-old who was playing with the toddler saw what was happening and ran over, pulling the boy out from under the car stated Orlando Sentinel.

“Any accident involving a child is a tragedy, and those that happen within a family can be the most difficult,” said Steinger, who co-founded Steinger, Iscoe & Greene law firm to help accident victims and their families. “It's natural to blame the person behind the wheel but when it's your own family member tempers can flare.”

It is a difficult time for any family but accidents do happen and the important thing is to keep the injured protected and the family close.

According to Orlando Sentinel, a family member rushed the toddler to a nearby hospital, and he was then transferred to Delray Medical Center in critical condition. Steinger says that children often face life-threatening injuries after even minor accidents.

A family should band together in this situation to ensure the insurance company takes care of things.

“They're small and fragile,” he said. “An impact that would be a minor injury for an adult can ruin a child's life.”

Steinger says the accident will have lasting consequences on the family.

When an accident happens within a family, he says that Steinger, Iscoe and Greene recommends focusing on the insurance company.

“It's not the driver who ultimately pays, it's their insurance,” Steinger said. “If the uncle and the parents can present a united front, working together to make sure the insurance pays its fair share, then there's no need for a lifelong family grudge.”
