mPanion Awarded Patent and Aims for Future of Messaging
SEATTLE, Washington (PRWEB) December 16, 2013 -- mPanion®, the mobile location pioneer, announced that it has been awarded a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), U.S. Patent No. 8,583,079, titled “Rich Presence Status based on Location, Activity, Availability and Transit Status of a User”. Some embodiments of the patented technology provide a system for determining relevant text messages that a user can select from while messaging or in social networking applications, which may be determined based on input parameters received from the user’s mobile device, such as his or her location, activity, availability, or transit status. Such embodiments address privacy concerns with a system using group based privacy settings, and also offer a system to prioritize the automated system-generated updates and the manual user-generated updates.
Patent Award Announcement
"Our vision is to enhance the messaging experience on mobile devices," said mPanion Founder and CEO Neeraj Chawla. "Text messaging is already going through a paradigm shift with the rise of new messaging and social networking services. However, few technologies have managed to change the basic user experience of creating a message. Our patented technology offers new and efficient ways to input messages into the device, and can be integrated with existing messaging and social services."
mPanion has received three issued patents from the USPTO to date, including earlier-issued patents 8,050,690 and 8,489,111. mPanion also has five additional patents pending in the United States. “We are focusing our efforts on building partnerships with the industry players, device manufacturers, carriers, and automotive companies to bring our technology to the mainstream users, and we remain committed to creating and protecting our IP,” said Umesh Amin, who is on the Board of Directors of mPanion, Inc.
Patent covers determining relevant text messages based on location and activity.
Location based messaging has been considered the future of messaging, and the recent advances in sensor technologies embedded in mobile devices that enable such devices to detect motion, activity, and transit status of the user are accelerating the development of messaging services based on user’s location and other activity states, such as walking, driving, running, etc. The patent claims cover key aspects of determining relevant text messages based on location, activity, availability, and/or transit status of the user. The technology also addresses privacy concerns by sharing the status updates based on group based privacy settings. Another key aspect covered is combining the automated and manual status updates to display the most relevant status updates of the user.
