HealthLeaders Media Recognizes 20 People Who Are Making a Difference in Healthcare
Danvers, MA (PRWEB) December 18, 2013 -- HealthLeaders Media, the leading provider of healthcare business news and research, is honoring individuals who have had made a difference in healthcare in 2013. This list of influential individuals represents the 7th annual HealthLeaders 20, to be released December 17 on http://www.healthleadersmedia.com/20people.
The editors of HealthLeaders Media selected the 20 honorees for their significant efforts to improve the healthcare industry.
The HealthLeaders 20 list has recognized those from the C-suite, physicians, nurses, and volunteers; but also considers inventors, actors, chefs, politicians, bureaucrats, and others who may be outside of the industry but who are still making an outsized impact on it. This year’s list includes a profile of each honoree and a description of how they are making a profound difference in healthcare.
Among the honored is Texas Health Resources CEO Douglas D. Hawthorne, who has positioned his health system for community-based care; and Martin Makary, MD, a prominent Johns Hopkins pancreas surgeon specializing in minimally invasive surgery and eyelet transplants. Kristine Aznavoorian, a pediatric emergency nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital, is recognized for her child advocacy work; and Charles Ornstein, an investigative reporter at the independent news organization ProPublica, is recognized for a collaborative effort with the Association of Health Care Journalists to demand more transparency around critical healthcare data.
"The exciting part is we are seeing change," says Hawthorn. "Changing how a community lives happens slowly and surely, but we have a chance to do something big."
This year’s honorees join the ranks of previous winners, such as 2012’s Nancy M. Schlichting, CEO, Henry Ford Health System in Detroit; 2011’s Wright Lassiter III, CEO of Alameda Health System in California; 2010’s Tony West, then an assistant attorney general targeting healthcare fraud and now the third-ranking official in the U.S. Department of Justice; 2009’s Dean Kamen, a medical device inventor; and 2008’s Dennis Quaid, an actor and activist for patient safety.
