Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency Receives a Donation of 600 Books, Boosting Childhood Literacy
Salisbury, NC (PRWEB) January 04, 2014 -- A group of Thomasville High School (THS) students made sure hundreds of children spent the holiday season reading a new book. As reported by the Thomasville Times, the THS collaborated on a book drive in order to support childhood literacy.
Thirteen students in two early childhood classes at THS collaborated on a book drive in an effort to increase literacy among prekindergarden children. In early September, students began to collect as many books as possible. They wrote donation letters, researched literacy statistics and met with teachers and staff with a goal of gathering 200 books. They collected nearly 1,000.
"It feels good knowing all of us worked together to accomplish this and donate books to children who may not have books at home or are in the situation where they can't get books," said Kayla Mock, who works at Salisbury-Rowan Community Action Agency's (SRCAA) Thomasville Head Start Center.
An excerpt from the Head Start Leaders Guide to Positive Child Outcomes stresses the importance of literacy. "Literacy for children birth to five refers to the skills and abilities that are the forerunners of conventional reading and writing. Learning to read and write does not happen overnight. It is the result of many cumulative, interrelated experiences beginning at birth. Young children learn from experience. From the earliest days of life, they get messages from their environment about what is important and what has meaning. This is why all early childhood environments need to be rich in literacy enhancing materials and experiences. Literacy-rich environments are literally full of opportunities for reading and writing."
