It is common knowledge that poultry and meat processing plants are known for high water consumption.
Poultry processing consumes between 3 to 10 gallons of water per bird. For turkeys the usage is even higher. The water is typically contaminated with protein and carbohydrates from meat, fat, blood, skin and feathers. FRC’s Adriaan van der Beek explains, “We understand the challenge of treating poultry and meat processing wastewater and the major pollutants such as Fats Oils & Greases (FOG), Suspended Solids (TSS), COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) and BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) probably better than any-one in the industry. In addition to the standard contamination, there is a trend for improved phosphorus removal.”
