Tampa, FL (PRWEB) December 20, 2013
WellCare Health Plans, Inc. (NYSE: WCG), through its Staywell Health Plan, recently donated $3,000 to Children’s Safety Village of Central Florida, Inc. (CSV) to help children learn to recognize safety hazards, and acquire the safety skills that can prevent accidents and injuries.
The donation will be used for three, free community events designed to teach water and transportation safety, prevent drowning and heatstroke, and provide strategies to combat cyberbullying. Interactive demonstrations will be held on each safety topic.
“Childhood injuries are a growing public health problem, but there are proven ways to reduce both the likelihood and severity of these injuries through education and prevention,” said Juanita Black, executive director, CSV. “WellCare’s support and generous donation are vital to meeting the growing need for safety education and injury prevention in our community.”
“WellCare has a focus on preventive health, and learning how to stay safe at an early age is critical to long-term wellbeing,” said David McNichols, state president, WellCare of Florida. “By working with CSV, we can help give our children the tools they need to be safe and lead better, healthier lives.”
CSV operates a child-sized “city” in Orlando, Fla., to teach essential safety skills. The city mirrors a typical community with miniature buildings, paved streets, sidewalks, a functioning traffic light, railroad crossing, fire safety house, power plant and a water safety complex. It hosts schools, day care centers, Head Start programs and groups interested in teaching children how to identify and confront everyday safety hazards. Classes and activities are continuously provided in an effort to reduce preventable injuries and deaths in children ages 0 – 14.
