University of Colorado Selects OnCore to Support Clinical Research Operations
Madison, WI and Denver, CO (PRWEB) December 20, 2013 -- Forte Research Systems, a leading developer of specialized clinical trial management systems (CTMS) and enterprise research solutions, and the University of Colorado’s (CU) health care programs, in partnership with University of Colorado Health (UCHealth), are pleased to announce that CU has selected the OnCore® Enterprise Research system to provide centralized support for its portfolio of clinical trials. The OnCore system, developed in collaboration with leading research institutions, will become the backbone of the clinical research enterprise at both of these institutions.
Switching to a standards-based system
The University of Colorado Cancer Center, a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, led the initial search for a new system. The center had been managing its trials with a homegrown system that incorporated functionality for financials and biospecimen management. However, the system required significant resources to remain useful. “It was difficult to garner financial support for the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the system,” said Jessica Bondy, Director of the Research Informatics Shared Resource at the University of Colorado Cancer Center.
The center was also motivated to find a solution that could provide better support for its grants renewals. “During our most recent Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) competing renewal in 2011, we received feedback from the NCI reviewers that our legacy system did not constitute an adequate clinical trials management system,” Bondy said. "In particular, the reviewers cited the lack of support for our protocol review and monitoring activities.”
The search for a new system was extended to all the university research departments, which had been using various mechanisms to manage clinical research operations. “The project became a campus-wide initiative in part due to the emphasis the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) put on systems to promote research efficiency in the 2012 criteria for Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) proposals,” Bondy explained.
For the University of Colorado Health system, OnCore provides a way to consistently manage its research portfolio, which now extends across the Colorado Front Range.
OnCore was selected because of robust functionality for managing protocols, financials, biospecimens, tracking subjects and more. CU and UCHealth also chose OnCore because it is a system that is developed and continually enhanced through collaboration with leading research institutions. “We were drawn to OnCore because it required less local programming and because of its culture of responsiveness and robust community involvement,” Bondy said.
Srini Kalluri, Founder, President, CEO, & Chief Customer Officer at Forte, says the selection of OnCore signals a need for a standards-based system that requires less customization and fewer internal resources to maintain. “The OnCore community has worked together for over a decade to develop a system that supports best practices for research operations. The result is a system that provides superior functionality, as well as savings in the form of time and cost.”
