Dr. Kris Ford, DPM is now offering custom orthotics to his patients, something which there are several benefits to using.
Custom orthotics are specially-made devices designed to support and comfort the feet of one, specific person. Orthotics are used to improve balance and alignment, ease pain, and aid in posture. Orthotics are only manufactured after a podiatrist has conducted a complete evaluation of the patient’s feet, ankles, and legs, so the orthotic can accommodate their unique foot structure and pathology. Custom orthotics are built to fit the arch of the foot, and Dr. Ford builds each one using plaster to take an actual cast of the foot. As he says, “every foot is different.” He believes casts allow for a better-fitting mold.
One popular method of making orthotics is by starting with impression foam that the patient stands on to make a mold of their foot. While this is a quick method to capture the foot, it can be flawed by the patient leaning side-to-side etc, which can cause the orthotic to fit incorrectly. Therefore, Dr Ford thinks that foam boxes are not the best, nor most accurate product available on the market.
