ArtSchools.com, an online directory of the best art schools, responds to an article published by the New York Times on November 23rd, which reports that an education that includes art might actually help make people smarter.
According to the New York Times article titled “Art Makes You Smart,” many art advocates believe that art makes people smarter. However, there has been little concrete evidence to support this until now. Social scientists Brian Kisida, Jay P. Greene and Daniel H. Bowen found that “strong causal relationships do in fact exist between arts education and a range of desirable outcomes” through research involving students at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Ark.
The scientists teamed up with the museum to conduct a study to determine if art does make you smarter. The researchers organized a lottery to select children to visit the popular museum. Over 11,000 students and 500 teachers participated in the study. The researchers administered surveys, which assessed participants’ knowledge of art, tolerance, interest and historical empathy when visiting the museum. Participants were also required to write an essay responding to one of the pieces of artwork in the museum.
The article reveals the study’s findings, “Visiting an art museum exposes students to a diversity of ideas that challenge them with different perspectives on the human condition. Expanding access to art, whether through programs in schools or through visits to area museums and galleries, should be a central part of any school’s curriculum.”
Andrew Girard, a representative from ArtSchools.com, a directory showcasing the best art schools in the country, says this study proves that there are significant benefits to art education. “Art should not be discounted and it is essential in order for students to become well-rounded, creative individuals,” he says. “Art helps broaden a student’s mind and improve their analytical and creative skills.”
Girard continues, “It’s our passion to connect young people to their dream art school. We encourage all art enthusiasts to continue their education and expand their minds through creative activities. If you’re looking for an art school, we can help you find the best one.”
