The screens on electronics devices are precision optics. That’s why a Clarity or other professional lens care kit from an optical store makes a smart stocking stuffer.

Nearly 2/3 of Americans include electronics on their holiday gift-giving list. More than ever, these items – from tablets to smartphones to e-readers – go everywhere. Users take them to the kitchen to look up a recipe. They’re pulled out of gear bags to search for a nearby restaurant. They go to the backyard, the classroom, the playroom, and, yes, even the bathroom. Along the way, they pick up fingerprints, lunch spatters, dust, and whatever debris is rolling around in the bottom of a briefcase or backpack.
Proper cleaning of touchscreens and other electronics makes using them more enjoyable and also protects the high-tech gear. “The screens on electronics devices are precision optics,” says Jodi Groh, Director of Marketing for Nanofilm, maker of Clarity® lens care products. “That’s why a Clarity or other professional lens care kit from an optical store makes a smart stocking stuffer to get the surface clean without worrying about scratching or damage.”
Nanofilm is offering a guide to caring for electronic screens and touchscreens, which can be downloaded from the company website, http://www.nanofilmproducts.com. It includes a number of simple do’s and don’ts.
DON’T clean with paper products or clothing. They can grind in dust and paper fibers, potentially scratching. Used with water, paper products can’t remove oils, hair products, or fingerprints.
DON’T use glass cleaners, household detergents, or household soaps. Electronic screens often have coatings on them that can be destroyed by harsh chemicals.
DO use only professional optical cleaners specially formulated for precision optics.
DON’T spray cleaner directly on the device. It may penetrate seals and leak into the case. Instead, spray professional cleaner on a clean microfiber or other soft cloth and gently wipe the lens. Or, use a pre-moistened lens cleaner cloth that has just the right amount of cleaner in a clean towelette.
DO keep lens care towelettes in your electronics case for quick, safe clean-ups.
DO wash a micro-fiber cloth regularly, if you use one. They can pick up dirt particles that can damage a surface.
DO check your owner’s manual. If you have questions or concerns, it’s the ultimate guide to care.
