Motorcycle riders can see all the other vehicles out there, from subcompacts to 18 wheel transport trucks and everything in between. The problem is that the reverse isn’t generally the case - car and truck drivers often have issues seeing motorcycles on the road. Often, drivers are preoccupied by the many distractions available in cars today from radios, phones, children, GPS’ and so on. It is, simply put, way too easy to not pay attention to the road.
And, right or wrong, in an accident between a motorcycle and any other vehicle, it is the motorcycle, and more importantly, the rider who loses.
It is the riders’ responsibility to be extra aware of their surroundings, and it is up to drivers to respect the motorcycle and rider. During the riding season, drivers have to consciously watch out for and respect riders. This means that drivers should not try and “squeeze” by the rider because the whole lane is not being used. Do not tailgate a motorcycle. Give it the same distance to motorcyclists that is granted to cars or other large vehicles.
Most important, it is imperative to remember that many serious motorcycle accidents happen at intersections when drivers are trying to make the light, and hence increase their speed to get through the intersection. The driver will not “see” the rider because the driver is looking for a car turning left and not a motorcycle. Motorcycles are comparably small when measured against a car or truck. The driver must pay attention or the rider will not be seen. As well it is up to the rider to wait that extra second before attempting a left turn to make sure the oncoming vehicle is slowing and sees the rider.
Riders and drivers will be all much safer if speed limits are respected and distractions are kept to a minimum.
