Yourwellness Magazine Follows Up Prescription Drugs and Accidental Child Poisoning Study
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 10 July 2013 -- According to a new study, published in the June 3rd online edition of Paediatrics, the number of children being accidentally poisoned by prescription drugs has grown, as the number of adults being prescribed medications has risen. Lead researcher Dr. Lindsey Burghardt, from the division of emergency medicine at Boston Children's Hospital, explained, “We found between 2000 and 2009 [that] rates of paediatric exposure to adult medications were increasing.”
She continued, “This is the first step, to identify the extent of the problem. Despite all these precautions that have been put in place to try to prevent these poisonings in kids the problem persists. In fact, the number of poisonings has been increasing.” She added that until researchers can identify why this is happening, parents should keep these medications out of the reach of young children, and inaccessible to teenagers – who use parents’ narcotic painkillers recreationally or to attempt suicide. With this in mind, Yourwellness Magazine explored herbal remedies as an alternative to prescription drugs. According to Yourwellness Magazine, “Whilst most people think that the most effective cure for illnesses and ailments are from the medication prescribed by doctors, alternative herbal remedies can also play a part in the healing process and the road to recovery. As prescription costs become increasingly higher, and people have less money in their pockets as a result of the rising cost of living, cheaper, herbal alternatives have become dramatically more popular.”
Yourwellness Magazine explained that, as well as being more affordable, herbal remedies have little or no side effects and are very different to man-made drugs as they are a product of the natural growing processes of the earth. Yourwellness Magazine noted that herbs and plants have existed for millions of years, long before medicines and drugs were manufactured and distributed to the population. The article added that whilst there are regular concerns about the impact of certain man-made drugs on people, the worst an herbal remedy can is have no impact upon the body or be thrown up, and herbs are not potentially toxic, so once the herb has been expelled by the body they’ll be no long lasting effects or permanent damage.
