Motorcycle renters must obey the “rules of the road”. Motorcycles are fast and maneuverable. Therefore when riding a motorcycle there is the temptation to ride at a faster speed and subsequently more recklessly than one should. Riders must obey the same “rules of the road” as any driver.
Motorcycle riders know very well the dangers of the road. Mostly it is the risk of not being seen. So, not only do riders need to follow the rules but must also compensate for drivers who do not. In any collision between a motorcycle and a car or truck of any size it is the rider who loses.
Therefore, the rider must always be thinking “what if”. Riding defensively involves scanning for potential dangers. Aside from other drivers and pedestrians the rider must look out for road conditions such as potholes, oil patches, gravel & dirt, speed bumps, & embedded tracks. Literally anything that can upset the balance of the motorcycle is a real danger.
Sharing the road with drivers who do not obey the rules of the road cannot be relied on and pose another major danger to riders. A left hand turn is a huge hazard spot whether the rider is making the turn, or going through and a driver is making the turn. It is up to the rider to watch and scan, and slow down to make sure the driver has seen the rider. When slowing to prevent a left hand turn collision, the rider also has to be concerned that the driver behind is paying attention and not rear-ending the slowing motorcycle.
The roads are a jungle.
And it is up to the rider to avoid danger.
