Yourwellness Magazine Follows Up Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Study
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 17 July 2013 -- According to a new study by the Environmental Investment Organisation (EIO), ("This week’s series of public Carbon Rankings concludes with the 800 largest companies in the world and indicates a failure by the majority of companies to report their emissions"), many of the largest companies in the world do not have their greenhouse gas data independently verified and do not report their emissions fully or correctly. The EIO found that just 37% of the world's 800 largest companies disclosed complete data and correctly adopted the basic principles of emissions reporting, while only 21% had their data externally verified. A lone firm, German chemicals producer BASF, reported emissions across its entire value chain. (http://www.eio.org.uk/etindex.php?page=press_release_19)
Sam Gill, chief executive of the EIO, commented, “This ought to be a wakeup call for companies. Since the majority of total corporate emissions often come from (value chain) sources, large quantities of emissions are not being accounted for. Not only could this be a source of unmeasured risk for companies but it also means we are not getting the full picture in terms of corporate emissions.” (http://www.eio.org.uk/etindex.php?page=press_release_19)
With this in mind, Yourwellness Magazine explored the impact of greenhouse gas emissions on climate change. According to Yourwellness Magazine, “The rise of global warming means far more than simply a damaged atmosphere; the results range from climate change, sea levels rising and the destruction of the ecosystems across the globe. Vast expanses of desert landscapes and islands have disappeared as well as killing over 100,000 people a year due to heat waves and droughts. As the heat of the planet increases, more water vapour is created which stops heat escaping from the planet.”
Yourwellness Magazine outlined the three greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change:
1. Carbon dioxide/CO2. This occurs from the burning of fossil fuels and is the primary cause of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. It is also created naturally through humans breathing and the fermentation of waste products, but it’s a very harmful gas at high concentrations.
2. Methane. This is the product of mining fossil fuels, agricultural endeavours and the decay of organic substances. Although it is not as prevalent in the atmosphere as CO2, methane traps heat as a higher rate, making it more dangerous.
3. Nitrous Oxide/N2O. This is generated through fertilisers in agricultural practices, catalytic converters in cars and naturally through oceans. This gas is 300 times more effective as trapping heat in the atmosphere, and lasts 120 years in the Earth’s atmosphere.
