Kaggle and NLP Logix Chief Scientist Work Together
Jacksonville, Florida (PRWEB) July 24, 2013 -- Kaggle, Inc. and Matt Berseth, Chief Scientist and Co-Founder of NLP Logix, have worked together amicably to resolve a disagreement that arose from a recent international data science contest.
The contest, hosted on Kaggle’s competition platform, required contestants to take historical flight data and build a predictive model that would estimate successfully both the landing and gate arrival time for all flights at any given time in the United States. The competition attracted many top data scientists from across the world. The winning models beat the current industry standard benchmarks being used by airlines by 40%. Unfortunately, Berseth's final model submission was inadvertently submitted improperly, and instead of placing fourth in the competition, his model was ineligible.
"I was very disappointed to have my model out of the final running," said Berseth, "but Kaggle and I were able to work together to identify and resolve the issue."
The mutual resolution resulted in Berseth being recognized with an honorable mention in the contest, and receiving the Kaggle profile ranking he would have earned had his entry been eligible.
"We have had the good fortune to attract brilliant data science minds from across the world to solve some of industry's biggest challenges," said Rich Sorkin, Chief Operating Officer of Kaggle. "We are pleased to have worked to resolve this."
