Spine surgeons can now take advantage of an effective alternative to PLIF cage insertion. As Osimplant’s newly launched device, ARIA® offers a parallel expandable mechanism that simplifies device insertion which provides significant surgical and patient benefits.

Designed to match natural vertebral anatomy, ARIA has received positive market reception due to its intra-operative expansion capabilities and the option of a two-step heightening process, which aims to minimize bone removal and tissue retraction. Additionally this expandable cage is designed to provide spinal alignment, stability and optimal conditions for fusion in the posterior treatment of such spinal problems as; degenerative diseases, deformities, scoliosis and osteoporosis.

In order to provide distinct advantageous to patients and surgeons, ARIA’s design is reliant upon the use of PEEK-OPTIMA® Natural polymer (from Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions, the leading provider of PEEK-based polymers worldwide), which offers a broad range of performance characteristics that are virtually unmatched by other implantable materials.

In particular, these characteristics and benefits include:

  • An elastic modulus similar to cortical bone - which helps to minimise stress shielding and encourage load sharing.
  • Radiolucent - allows for easier post-operative healing site assessment due to proven compatibility with imaging technologies (i.e. X-ray, CT and MRI).
  • High compressive strength and durability – can withstand daily load requirements and expansion capabilities.
  • Biocompatible – More than ten year history of successful use in long term implantable devices.

“The decision to choose PEEK-OPTIMA Natural was quite easy to do because it is well known material that offers easier post-operative control and follow up due to its invisibility in X-ray. We did consider other materials such as metal, but because of our experience with PEEK-OPTIMA® Natural and the great outcome in our test phase we chose to use this material,” said Mr Karadag, General Manager, Osimplant.
