News of a new standard for wireless technology has been met with glee across the tech world and has caught the eye of digital marketing agencies like Everspark Interactive. A new standard dubbed 802.11ac or just “ac,” boasts a top speed of 1.3 Gigabits per second – more than twice the current standard. Technologist and online entrepreneur Jason Hennessey says most users can't use all that speed, but will still see immediate improvements in their internet experience especially while agencies and larger businesses can benefit from this speed.
The AC technology has been under production for about a year, with a few ac devices already making their way to market. But last week the Wi-Fi Alliance, an international standards organization, officially certified the new standard which means it will go into much wider use according to CNN Money.
“This increase in speed will be built into many new wireless devices, but the broadband connections your wireless connects to won't be able to match it,” said Hennessey, co-founder of Everspark Interactive, Atlanta's digital marketing agency. “That means even AC devices won't get the full benefit of the new speed.”
But Hennessey says it will still be a leap forward for consumers and technologist who spend a great amount of their time online.
“Right now, wireless connections can only serve so many devices before they start to lag or drop people,” Hennessey said. “With ac routers and ac devices, the capacity will be far greater – you won't notice lag during peak hours anymore.”
If internet connections start to match the new wireless speeds, an entire high definition movie could be downloaded in just minutes, Hennessey says.
“The short term effect is smoother connections,” Hennessey said. “The long term effect will be a level of connection speed most of us can't imagine.”
