This app will help students recognize real patient presentations, not merely their descriptions in a vignette or multiple-choice question, and to view the associated exam and neuroimaging findings on screen as they would for an actual patient.

Demos Medical Publishing, a publisher of high-quality professional books and digital products for physicians and other healthcare providers, announces the release of the first neurology app centered on videos of actual patient examinations and case histories. The Neurology Video Textbook app, which is also the first app to be released by Demos Medical, is a teaching, learning, and reference tool for medical students, residents, practitioners, and anyone interested in clinical neurology. It is available for the iPad, and as a DVD or downloadable software for Windows and Mac.

Neurology Video Textbook offers access to over 300 real-life case studies and videos of patient examinations. It allows users to watch patients describing their symptoms in their own words and see neurologic pathologies and exam findings demonstrated on screen, enhancing appreciation and recognition of classic disease presentations and building diagnostic skills.

“My motivation for this textbook came from my experiences during medical training,” said Dr. Jonathan Howard, author of Neurology Video Textbook. “Often, I could describe neurological findings from rote memory or recognize them when described on a multiple-choice test. However, when faced with a real patient suffering from a neurological disorder, I was often lost. Later, teaching medical students, I realized that is the case for almost every student. This app will help students recognize real patient presentations, not merely their descriptions in a vignette or multiple-choice question, and to view the associated exam and neuroimaging findings on screen as they would for an actual patient. I also hope these videos will convey the wonder of the nervous system and inspire students to pursue a career in neurology.”

In addition to over and video clips that visually convey the rich and varied spectrum of neurologic disease, Neurology Video Textbook includes descriptions of pathology, neuroradiologic findings, and disease management and follow-up. The cases, dynamic radiological images, and links to further text discussion, guide the user through the content and offer clinical and scientific overviews of the major categories of neurologic disease. Users can navigate forwards and backwards through the app via the home menu, detailed chapter and text menus, or by searching the index. An internet connection is required to view the videos.
