Health experts at ChemistDirect offer advice on hair loss in men and women
London (PRWEB UK) 1 July 2013 -- Whether it’s thinning hair, a bald patch or a receding hair line, hair loss in any form can have a big impact on a person’s self confidence. The most common form of hair loss is androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness – which according to the NHS affects 6.5millon men in the UK (1).
In women, this is called female-pattern baldness and they are more likely to experience it after the menopause. This is thought to be due to hormone fluctuations, particularly an increase in androgens.
In women, the first signs of hair loss are often more hairs than usual in their brush and a widening of their parting. Whereas in men, the hairline begins to recede from the forehead in a pattern resembling the letter M, and they may lose hair at the back of their scalp. For men, this condition is hereditary, whilst in women the cause is unknown.
Omar El-Gohary, Superintendent Pharmacist at ChemistDirect said: “Other forms of hair loss can be the result of drug therapy, stress, or autoimmune reactions where the body attacks the hair follicles.
“Although more often than not pattern baldness is a natural part of the ageing process which poses no health risk and does not require treatment, treatment is available for cosmetic purposes if required.”
He suggests Minoxidil, which is available to buy over the counter as Regaine, and can be used to treat male or female pattern baldness. Finasteride (Propecia) is a daily tablet available on prescription, which can slow down and in some cases reverse hair loss.
But he warns: “These treatments are not effective for everyone, and any gains will be reversed when treatment ends.”
However, there is some evidence to show that vitamin deficiency can be linked to hair loss (2). A healthy balanced diet containing all essential vitamins and nutrients may be beneficial in maintaining healthy hair, and a natural supplement such as Medigro may also help to promote hair health.
