New Non-Invasive, No Downtime Liposuction Technique Gaining Ground in Australia
Newcastle, NSW (PRWEB) July 03, 2013 -- CoolSculpting®, a new non-invasive cosmetic procedure that’s being seen as an alternative to liposuction, has been gaining ground in Australia, according to Dr Bernard Beldholm. A prominent Sydney and Newcastle specialist cosmetic surgeon. Dr Beldholm recently appeared on Channel 9 News Australia to talk about the new procedure.
“Essentially, CoolSculpting freezes the fat cells – and only the fat cells – in the targeted area,” Beldholm explains. “Once they’ve crystallized, your body will metabolize and eliminate them naturally over a period of a few months. It’s non-invasive and does no damage to other tissue so you can go back to doing normal activities right after a session.”
Developed by scientists at Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard teaching affiliate, CoolSculpting® is a patented, TGA-approved procedure and by the close of 2012, 7,000 treatments had already been completed in Australia. It’s a number that has grown in the months since and one that’s projected to grow even further in the future as more people become aware of the procedure’s advantages.
Dr Beldholm, who heads the Specialist Cosmetic Surgery clinic, reports seeing a significant increase in demand for CoolSculpting® in his own practice in recent months. “It’s not difficult to understand why more patients are opting for this procedure, which is also known as cryolipolisis,” he says. “It’s very convenient for one thing. A treatment for one area typically only takes an hour, making it easy to squeeze into a regular day, and because it’s non-invasive and the cooling is controlled and targets only fat cells, there’s no downtime to factor in. As for the results, these are highly noticeable as well as stable and long-lasting. Quite a few patients see a fat reduction of 20 to 28 per cent after one treatment, which is more than enough for most.”
The ideal candidates for CoolSculpting® are people who want to eliminate stubborn fat that cause bulging in certain areas such as the flanks, abdomen and back. It is a cosmetic procedure and not a solution for obesity and Dr Beldholm is careful to point out that while it is highly innovative and effective, it is not the best procedure for everyone or for every problem area.
“CoolSculpting is best for those who want to get rid of fat deposits in small areas, such as the love handles, which are often highly resistant to even the most stringent diet and exercise regimens” he says. “It’s not the best option for larger areas primarily because the procedure involves suctioning and not all areas will fit between the cooling panels. For those larger areas, liposculpting remains the treatment of choice.”
Dr Beldholm is one of a select few of Australian surgeons who are Fellows of both the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS) as well as the Australasian College of Cosmetic Surgery (FACCS). He has had over 11 years of rigorous medical training, including specialist surgical training in a wide range of surgical fields, and performs a wide range of cosmetic procedures in his practices in Maitland and Sydney.
