Kolcraft Enterprises Announces Commitment To The "Safe To Sleep" Campaign
Chicago, Illinois (PRWEB) July 02, 2013 -- Kolcraft® Enterprises announced its support of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for the Safe to Sleep campaign.
The Safe to Sleep campaign aims to educate parents, caregivers, and health care providers about ways to reduce the risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death.
Safe to Sleep is an expansion of the original Back to Sleep campaign, which started in 1994. Back to Sleep was named for its recommendation to place healthy babies on their backs to sleep, the most effective action that parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of SIDS. Since that campaign started, the percentage of infants placed on their backs to sleep has increased dramatically, and the overall SIDS rates have declined by more than 50 percent.
In addition to strategies for reducing the risk of SIDS, Safe to Sleep also describes actions that parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of other sleep-related causes of infant death, such as suffocation.
Kolcraft kicked off its efforts to support the campaign at the Sinai Community Institute Community Baby Shower on June 7, 2013, where in collaboration with SIDS Illinois, moms were educated on best safe sleep practices for their babies.
“We’re excited and proud to support the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development on getting the word out about this incredibly important cause and campaign,” says Andrea Ostapa, Senior Marketing Manager at Kolcraft Enterprises. “While Safe to Sleep has helped demonstrably decrease the number of reported SIDS cases around the country, we feel there’s still more to be done to ensure that all parents are aware of the actions they can take to reduce sleep-related infant fatalities.”
The latest recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) include:
1.) Always place baby on his or her back to sleep, for naps and at night, to reduce the risk of SIDS.
2.) Put baby to sleep in a separate sleep area in the same room where you sleep. If you bring baby into your bed to breastfeed, make sure to put him or her back into a separate sleep area, such as a safety-approved crib, bassinet, or portable play area when you are finished.
3.) Use a firm sleep surface – like a Sealy or Kolcraft crib mattress – covered by a fitted sheet, to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related causes of death. Remove all loose bedding, soft objects and toys.
