Study Shows Obese Male Mice Father Obese Offspring
Washington, USA (PRWEB) July 09, 2013 -- In an article written on the Science Daily website, during the annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in San Francisco, scientists reported their findings of a study that observed what happened when male mice who were fed a high-fat diet, became obese and had offspring. It was discovered that the fathering mice were more likely to have offspring who also had higher levels of body fat.
Felicia Nowak, an associate professor of biomedical sciences in Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine said, "We've identified a number of traits that may affect metabolism and behavior of offspring dependent on the pre-conception diet of the father.”
It seemed that it is possible to cause inherited traits in genes to be impacted by environmental and lifestyle factors, such as overeating and obesity. The findings suggest that individuals who are overweight and obese can possibly carry down their unhealthy, overweight stature to their children.
The correlation between human parents and children and diet have been well-established, but scientists have been studying the issue in mice, so they can better understand the biological mechanisms behind the phenomenon.
In the study, male mice were fed a high-fat diet for 13 weeks before given the chance to mate, where the females were fed a low-fat diet. Both sexes of the offspring were fed a standard low-fat diet and were studied at the different time periods of 20 days, 6 weeks, and 12 months.
The male offspring of paternal mice, when compared with offspring of control mice (who were fed a standard low-fat diet), had a higher body weight at six weeks of age. At the 12 week period, they were more obese than the control mice. Also, the male offspring of the high-fat diet father mice had different patterns of body fat composition. This was a clear marker for overweight and obese diseases.
The next step in the research will include trying to locate and identify the genes that are responsible for the behavioral and physiological changes.
"Early detection and prediction of risk for obesity, diabetes and related diseases will enable individuals and health care workers to delay or prevent the related disabilities and increase life expectancy," Nowak said.
With the knowledge that the future results would bring, perhaps scientists can find ways to help human keep a healthier lifestyle for their children.
