North Muskoka Resorts Welcome Return of S.S. Bigwin
Muskoka, Ontario (PRWEB) July 03, 2013 -- After an absence of 44 years, the historic steamship the S.S. Bigwin is once again carrying passengers over the waters of the beautiful Lake of Bays, and members of the Resorts of North Muskoka Group (http://www.north-muskoka.com), an association of 14 small and midsized housekeeping cottage resorts, full service resorts, lodges and inns located in Muskoka between Huntsville and Algonquin Park, couldn’t be happier with this exciting new north Muskoka attraction. “Muskoka area resorts and tourist operators have been eagerly anticipating the launch the S.S. Bigwin and predict that the ship will be a major tourist draw, not only for the town of Dorset, but for the entire north Muskoka region,” states Resorts of North Muskoka group member and spokesman Les Gayne.
Rescued 22 years ago, sunk in a Lake of Bays Boathouse, the S.S. Bigwin has been pain-staking restored over 10 years to its original glory by the Lake of Bays Marine Museum and Navigation Society. Built in 1910 for use on Lake Muskoka, the 66 foot long wooden ship moved to the Lake of Bays in 1925 where it worked ferrying passengers to Bigwin Inn until the late 1960s. The restoration of the S.S. Bigwin was supported by businesses and individuals from the community who generously donated time and money to help make this project a reality.
Just in time for the busy summer season, the S.S. Bigwin will be offering twice weekly scheduled public cruises, with payment by donation only. Additional special cruises are also being planned, including a Great Gatsby Fundraiser slated for July 15th. The historic steamship is berthed at its new home at the Dorset town docks, beside the marine museum and retail store.
“Saving the S.S. Bigwin and bringing her back to life has been an amazing accomplishment for the town of Dorset. Everyone involved should be commended for all they have achieved. The S.S. Bigwin is a local attraction that the north Muskoka area can be proud of. This summer, we will be sure to recommend to our resort guests the short drive to Dorset to see the Bigwin as a ‘must see’ while vacationing in Muskoka,” adds Gayne.
