Making a Scientific Case for the Intelligent Design of Life, Darwin’s Doubt Debuts on New York Times Bestseller List
Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 03, 2013 -- The new book Darwin’s Doubt: The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and the Case for Intelligent Design debuted on the July 7 New York Times bestseller list at #7. This marks the first time that a book making a scientific argument supporting the theory of intelligent design has achieved such prominent exposure. The theory of intelligent design holds that certain features of the universe and of living things are best explained by an intelligent cause, not an undirected process such as natural selection.
Published by HarperOne, Darwin’s Doubt was written by Dr. Stephen C. Meyer, who received his PhD in the history and philosophy of science from Cambridge University. Meyer also directs Discovery Institute’s Center for Science and Culture, the nation’s leading think-tank supporting scientific research on intelligent design.
“We are delighted that Darwin’s Doubt is attracting so much popular support,” said Robert Crowther director of communications for Discovery Institute. “We think the book can be a scientific game changer and take the evolution debate in a new direction.”
In addition to popular support, Crowther points out that the book has been endorsed by noted scientists at Harvard, the Max Planck Institute, and other leading scientific research institutions.
Dr. Russell Carlson, Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Director of the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center at the University of Georgia, says Darwin’s Doubt is “based on cutting-edge molecular biology” and calls it “an excellent book and a must read.”
Darwin’s Doubt tells the riveting story of a 530-million-year-old mystery known as the “Cambrian explosion,” a period in the history of life when many animals suddenly appeared in the fossil record without apparent ancestors in earlier layers of rock. Charles Darwin himself was mystified by the missing fossils, but during the past century, the mystery has intensified, not only because the ancestors of these animals have not been found, but also because scientists have learned more about what it takes to build an animal. Ultimately, Meyer argues that the theory of intelligent design is the best explanation for the origin of the Cambrian animals.
