‘Adopt a Child for One Day’ Beach Event to Bring Love, Hope and Laughter to At-Risk Children in Southern California
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 09, 2013 -- P.S. I Love You Foundation today announced that its 13th Annual Day At The Beach, ‘Adopt a Child for One Day,’ outreach event will take place on July 27th. Held at Manhattan Beach, ‘Day At The Beach’ brings over 250 volunteers together, one-on-one, with at-risk kids (ages 5-12) for a memorable and fun-filled day, including surf lessons, face painting and relay races. P.S. I Love You Foundation is a non-profit organization devoted to empowering at-risk youth by providing mentor and enrichment programs.
According to Evelyn Blumenberg, a Professor at UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, almost a quarter of children living in Los Angeles are at-risk or living below the poverty level. The ‘Day At The Beach’ event is just one of the many services the foundation provides to tackle this growing problem. The organization also works with shelters, family service organizations and Title 1 schools to identify at-risk youth and create positive activities that will empower, inspire, educate and influence the course of their lives.
“‘Adopt a Child for One Day’ is filled with love, laughter and positive adult role models,” said Patricia Jones, Founder of PSILYF. “The event fosters happy experiences for both the children and volunteers, promoting healthy interaction, inspiration and hope. Some of these children live 20 or 30 minutes from the beach, but have never seen the ocean. It’s incredible to witness a child experiencing the beach for the first time.”
‘Day At The Beach’ is held from 9am to 3pm and includes relay races, games, surf lessons, boogie boarding, playing and swimming in the ocean, beauty camp, face painting, t-shirt design, cupcake decorating, dress-up booth and massages. Pizza, ice cream and healthy snacks, as well as juice and water, will be provided throughout the day. Each child will leave with a boogie board, kite, beach towel and various toys/school supplies. The festivities take place on Manhattan Beach between 6th and 8th Street, just a few blocks south of the Manhattan Beach Pier.
Children attending the event come from throughout Los Angeles County, including South Central, Downtown, Compton, Watts, Carson, Hawthorne and San Pedro. Volunteers are from all over Los Angeles, from the Valley to Orange County, and many are South Bay locals.
