Lower MRSA risk in the bathroom, say PHS Washrooms
Cardiff (PRWEB UK) 4 July 2013 -- As a new study shows that pregnant women with diabetes are three times more likely to contract MRSA during labour, PHS Washrooms advises organisations on how to reduce their own risk of infections in the workplace.
Scientists from the University of California in Los Angeles carried out research to see if there is a link between pre-pregnancy diabetes and MRSA.
Writing in the American Journal of Infection Control and reported by diabetes.co.uk, the scientists found that diabetic women are at an increased risk of MRSA infection during labour and delivery.
In order to reduce the risk of infection, the team of researchers advise hospitals to be vigilant about possible MRSA risk among diabetic women in labour and delivery. Preventative steps recommended by the NHS include using antibacterial hand gel and disposable gloves.
Leading washroom services provider PHS Washrooms believe that all businesses should take steps to prevent infectious diseases like MRSA, not just those in the healthcare industry.
Keri Reynolds, Marketing Manager for PHS Washrooms, said: “Whilst MRSA is typically contracted in healthcare environments, there are a range of other bacterial infections like E.coli and salmonella that can easily spread in the general community.
“Organisations that are looking to reduce the risk of catching infections in the workplace should start in their washrooms, since this is an area where germs are most likely to be picked up.”
To help prevent the spreading of germs through skin to skin contact, PHS Washrooms has developed a range of products that incorporate antibacterial surface protection SteriTouch® to help maintain high levels of hygiene protection for all touchable areas in the washroom.
Keri Reynolds said: “This study highlights the importance of taking precautions against bacteria. Our exclusive SteriTouch range uses antibacterial surface protection to dramatically reduce the risk of cross-infection from bacteria such as MRSA, E.coli and salmonella.
“Businesses can choose to protect all touchable areas of their washroom, including cubicle services, hand dryers and baby changing services.
“And because the SteriTouch protection is embedded, it will not fade over time no matter how often the product is used.”
