Logging & Chip Trailer Manufacturing in North America: Market Size, Shares & Analysis
Rockville, MD (PRWEB) July 10, 2013 -- Logging & Chip Trailer Manufacturing in North America: Market Size, Shares & Analysis
When logs are hauled to saw mills for processing, a portion of the wood results in lumber, and the remainder becomes chips that are used as raw material in pulp and paper mills. These two products are usually transported in trailers engineered specifically to haul one or the other. Logs are hauled in an open trailer with bunks, bolsters, stakes or other equivalent means which cradle the logs and prevent them from rolling. Chip vans are box trailers used to transport forestry products such as wood chips, biomass and wood residue.
Although logging trailers and chip van trailers feature completely different designs, these two products are included together in this report is because of a common customer segment—the forestry industry. Logging trailers and chip van trailers are considered complementary product lines. The production of logging and chip trailers, with an estimated market value of $130 million in 2012, is small in terms of units manufactured. For most manufacturers, these types of trailers are not their primary products. In this report STN has presented data and analysis on 25 identified manufacturers of logging and chip van trailers in North America, six of which include both types of trailers in their product offerings. Two-thirds of all units manufactured are turned out by the top five manufacturers.
In addition to these companies, there are other manufacturers that produced a handful of logging and/or chip trailers in 2012. Small regional manufacturers are significant because proximity to customers is an important selling point.
The collapse of the US housing market ravaged the timber processing industry, with thousands of workers laid off, mills closed and companies losing money, as reflected in the report’s historical estimates of the size of the logging and chip trailer industries over the period 2006 to 2012. Projections for the size of the industry over the period 2013 to 2017 indicate a strong recovery in 2013 as the construction industry builds inventory in the run-up to healthy construction growth anticipated in 2014.
