Community Foundation Awards More Than $281,000 in Grants To Benefit Older Adults; Women and their Children
Waterbury, CT (PRWEB) July 05, 2013 -- Connecticut Community Foundation (CCF) awarded a special round of grants to benefit older adults. These included grants for Waterbury BRASS (Bringing Resources to Action to Serve Seniors), the Wheels Program of Greater New Milford, and a regional project for Benefits Outreach and Community Options Counseling. In addition, a grant was provided to Pennsylvania State University School of Hospitality Management for the Continuing Care Retirement Community Project. Funding, which totaled $234,226, came from the East Hill Woods Fund which was established to help older adults age successfully in their communities.
In addition, Connecticut Community Foundation awarded $18,000 in grants from the Women’s Fund, (which includes the Fannie B. Wheeler Fund, and the Whittemore Women & Children Fund) and an additional $29,318 in grants from the Lois Livingston McMillen Memorial Fund during its 2013 grant round.
The Women’s Fund offers grants to organizations that provide programs to improve the quality of life for women and children in the greater Waterbury area. The Lois Livingston McMillen Memorial Fund is focused on providing grants to organizations that serve women and children who are victims of physical, emotional or psychological abuse, sexual assault and domestic violence. Waterbury BRASS (East Hills Woods Fund)
• City of Waterbury: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site (Year 1) - $2,500 - to assist with overhead costs of participation of the Waterbury Senior Center as a location for BRASS programs.
• Hispanic Coalition of Greater Waterbury: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site (Year 2) - $4,500 - to assist with overhead costs of participation as a location for BRASS programs including transportation costs.
• Mattatuck Historical Society: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site/Partner (Year 1) - $2,500- to assist with overhead costs of participation of the Mattatuck Museum as a site and provider of BRASS programs.
• Mt. Olive A.M.E. Zion Senior Citizens Center: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site (Year 2) - $4,500- to assist with overhead costs of participation as a location for BRASS programs including staff and transportation costs.
• New Opportunities, Inc.: Waterbury BRASS Senior Programs Lead Agency (Year 2) - $50,000 - to fund a BRASS Program Coordinator to plan and organize programs for BRASS sites, publicize programs, evaluate programs and interests of older adults, and coordinate with site staff. Includes direct program costs.
• Silas Bronson Library: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site/Partner (Year 2) - $4,500- to assist with overhead costs in bringing programs to BRASS sites and serving BRASS participants on site. Includes costs of teaching older adults to use technology.
• St. Margaret Willow Plaza NRZ Association, Inc.: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site (Year 2) - $4,500 - to assist with overhead costs of participation as a location for BRASS programs including staff, janitorial and transportation costs.
• Waterbury Young Men’s Christian Association: Waterbury BRASS Senior Program Site/Partner (Year 2) - $4,500 - to assist with overhead costs in bringing programs to BRASS sites as well as serving BRASS participants on site. Includes instructor fees.
• Western CT Area Agency on Aging: Waterbury Outreach (Year 3) - $52,625 - to fund a full time Information and Benefits Specialist to provide benefits assistance and follow-up for older adults throughout the city of Waterbury. In addition, will coordinate the Waterbury Senior Services Provider Network.
Pathways Services for Seniors Initiative (East Hills Woods Fund)
• New Milford Senior Citizens Advisory Board: Wheels Program - $12,045 - to hire part time administrative staff to coordinate volunteers, trip requests and schedules. The organization will also work with the Nonprofit Assistance Initiative toward long-term sustainability.
• Western CT Area Agency on Aging: Benefits Outreach and Community Options Counseling (Year 1) - $42,120 - to hire an Outreach Counselor for the region (outside of Waterbury) to inform older adults and assist with benefits and programs that foster aging in the community. In addition, will train and collaborate with local providers and caregivers to build local capacity to assist older adults.
East Hill Woods Fund
• Pennsylvania State University School of Hospitality Management: Continuing Care Retirement Community Project (Year 3) - $49,936 – to build awareness among students and help them prepare for management roles in senior living.
Women’s Fund
• Connecticut Community Care, Inc. - $3,000.00 – for the Independent Living Fund for the Northwest Region for elderly women or younger women w/disabilities, of limited financial means, to help them remain safely in their homes for as long as possible.
• Connecticut Counseling Centers, Inc. - $2,000.00 - BIRTH Program (Born In Recovery Through Healthcare), Waterbury, provides support to pregnant and postnatal women seeking treatment for substance abuse, and their children.
• New Milford Visiting Nurse Association, Inc. - $2,000.00 - Nurturing Families Network, provides parent education to women and their families at their homes in New Milford, Bridgewater, Roxbury, Washington & Warren. These women are considered at high risk for abusing their children and many are non-English speaking and/or very young parents.
• New Opportunities, Inc. - $3,000.00 - In-the-Making program helps unemployed / underemployed women in the greater Waterbury area develop the work and life skills needed to move towards healthy interdependence, and includes job training, self empowerment, and case management.
• St. Vincent DePaul Society - $5,000.00 - Shelter Day Program which enables single homeless women to remain at the homeless shelter in Waterbury during the day from October 1, 2013 to May 1, 2014.
• Waterbury Youth Service System, Inc. - $3,000.00 - People Off Welfare Earning Resources program for unemployed / underemployed women to help them transition off assistance and learn the skills necessary to work for or start a daycare business.
Lois Livingston McMillen Memorial Fund
• Acts 4 Ministry, Inc. - $2,000.00 - Furniture Collaborative which assists economically challenged single women with children who are making a new start after a life crisis and need basic household furnishings.
• Jane Doe No More, Inc. - $5,600.00 - Escape Alive Survival Skills/Self Defense Classes for women and girls to provide participants with awareness tips, escape strategies, and kick, strike, and blow techniques that can, in the event of an attack, disable assailants thereby enabling escape.
• Safe Haven of Greater Waterbury, Inc. - $10,859.00 - Civil Legal Advocacy Project for victims of domestic violence to provide assistance with application for a Temporary Restraining Order (and develop a safety plan that includes options beyond the protection afforded by the TRO), court accompaniment, legal assistance for immigrants, and referrals to CT Legal Services for consultation and/or representation for divorce and child custody.
• Susan B. Anthony Project - $10,859.00 - Rebuilding Lives Program for battered and/or sexually abused women and their children, offering emergency shelter, counseling, advocacy with courts and social services, job readiness and job search support, and financial assistance to meet emergency needs.
