Bohemia, NY (PRWEB) July 05, 2013 -- On July 5, The Protective Group, a provider of insurance investigators, comments on an article published by NPR regarding the increase in the use of security cameras in public places by police departments.
According to a June 20th article published on NPR titled “In More Cities, A Camera On Every Corner, Park And Sidewalk,” cities around the US are starting to put security cameras in public places to better protect residents. The article focused on a particular town called Elk Grove in California. The cameras placed in this town work off the same technology used by the NYPD in New York City, which is designed to catch terrorists.
Some people have voiced their concern about the use of cameras in public places, claiming its uncomfortable be under the lens of a security camera everyday, however the system has proved to be effective, assisting law officers and dispatchers to respond to incidents faster and easier.
The article says the Elk Grove Police Department has spent about hundreds of thousands of dollars to keep the camera system working and plans on investing even more.
These security measures have proved helpful in the past. Now, with over 100 cameras placed in the small city, the article says Elk Grove hopes to lower its crime rate because there are “eyes” watching on every corner.
John Monderine, CEO of The Protective Group, a leading security company, says sometimes it’s necessary to install security cameras in public places to deter crime and protect residents. “There’s a fine line between security, and what people deem as ‘spying,”’ he says. “I understand the concern from people who believe this is an invasion of privacy. However, its better to be safe than sorry and security cameras can help police officers make more arrests than usual. In many cases, crime has decreased due to the increased use of surveillance cameras.”
Monderine says that many people can benefit from the use of security cameras. “Towns are not the only ones who can see positive results from installing video cameras,” he explains. “An insurance investigator could also use cameras to get enough evidence to prove a case. Businesses and even private homes could be protected by using surveillance cameras. It’s important to make sure your home or business is secured with video cameras.”
